Ray grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne in England and started drumming at an early age. After working in clubs backing singers and strippers (! ) he later studied with Alan Fearon ( principal tympanist/conductor with the Northern Symphony Orchestra) and gained degrees in jazz and classical percussion from Newcastle college of Arts and Technology and Trinity College London. Looking for work opportunities and a chance to get out of England he emigrated to Netherlands where he went back to school and studied with Koos Langelaan , Jan Wissink and Terra de Marez -Oyens and gained a Masters degree in performance specialising in mallets and composition, whilst also learning Dutch. Ray has a wide musical experience having worked in Europe and the United States both as a drummer and mallet player and also a teacher at the collegiate level.
